• Entries must be lawfully taken in full compliance with all applicable local, state, provincial, territorial, tribal, and federal hunting regulations.

    Animals must be free-ranging and taken under fair chase conditions.

    Entries must meet or exceed the published Longhunter minimum score for the applicable species and division.

    Only hunter-taken trophies are eligible for entry into the Longhunter Record Book.

    Velvet antlers are not accepted for entry into the Longhunter Record Book.

    Trophies must be measured by an approved Longhunter measurer using the Boone and Crockett scoring methodology adopted by the Longhunter Society.

    The required 60-day drying period must be observed prior to official measurement.

    Longhunter reserves the right to request additional documentation, photographs, or hunt details prior to accepting an entry.

    The Longhunter Society reserves the right to reject any trophy entry that fails to fully satisfy entry requirements.

  • The Longhunter Record Book recognizes and supports the principles of fair chase as the ethical, sportsmanlike, and lawful pursuit and taking of free-ranging wild game in a manner that does not give the hunter an improper or unfair advantage.

    Prohibited methods and technologies include, but are not limited to:

    • use of drones or unmanned aerial vehicles for scouting or locating game
    • electronic communication used to direct a hunter to specific animals in real time
    • thermal imaging equipment
    • night vision equipment
    • electronically enhanced or computer-assisted sighting systems
    • smart scopes or optics with integrated ballistic computers
    • rangefinding devices integrated into the aiming system
    • real-time location transmitting devices used to guide a hunter to game
    • artificial light used to take big game where prohibited by law
    • any technology that substantially removes the element of fair pursuit

    Any hunt determined to violate the spirit of fair chase may be rejected at the discretion of the Longhunter Records Committee.

  • A complete entry submission must include:

    • completed Hunter Field Report
    • signed Fair Chase Statement and Hunter Certification
    • completed official score sheet for the species entered
    • required photographs clearly showing the trophy
    • copy of hunting license or harvest tag

    Longhunter reserves the right to request additional supporting materials if necessary to verify eligibility.

  • All trophies must be measured by an approved Longhunter measurer.

    Measurement must follow the Boone and Crockett scoring system adopted by the Longhunter Society Record Book.

    The 60-day drying period must be observed before final measurements are taken.

    The official score sheet must be signed and dated by the measurer.

    Longhunter measurer identification information must be provided where indicated on the score sheet.

  • Entries must comply with the equipment standards applicable to the division under which the trophy is entered.

    The Longhunter Society recognizes traditional sporting equipment consistent with the historical spirit of muzzleloading, traditional archery, and period firearm hunting.

    Muzzleloader Requirement

    The Longhunter Society accepts trophies taken with muzzleloaders using black powder or a recognized black powder substitute as the propellant.

    Use of smokeless powder is not permitted.

    If a hunter uses a modern firearm to assist in taking a trophy, the animal is not eligible for entry into the Longhunter Muzzleloading Big Game Record Book.

    If it is legal in the jurisdiction where the hunt takes place to carry a muzzleloading handgun, and the hunter administers the final killing shot using the muzzleloading handgun or revolver, the animal may be eligible for entry.

    Traditional Muzzleloader

    Traditional muzzleloaders must be front-loading firearms of traditional external-hammer design.

    Inline ignition systems are not permitted in the Traditional Muzzleloader division.

    Loose black powder or traditional black powder substitutes may be used.

    Electronic ignition systems are not permitted.

    Open sights or peep sights are recommended for this division.

    Optical sights may be restricted depending on final division standards.

    Modern Inline Muzzleloader

    Inline muzzleloading rifles are permitted in the Modern Inline division.

    Black powder and black powder substitutes are permitted.

    Smokeless powder is not permitted.

    Saboted or conical projectiles are permitted.

    Electronic ignition systems are not permitted.

    Thermal imaging, electronic sighting devices, and smart optics are not permitted.

    Traditional Archery

    Bows must be hand-drawn and hand-held at the time of the shot.

    Electronic or battery-powered devices attached to the bow that assist with sighting or shooting are not permitted.

    Longbow, recurve, and selfbow equipment are recognized within traditional archery divisions.

    Crossbows are not permitted unless specifically recognized in a separate division.

    Illuminated or electronically powered sighting devices are not permitted.

    Black Powder Cartridge Rifle

    Rifles must be single-shot black powder cartridge firearms or faithful reproductions of historical designs.

    Black powder or black powder substitutes are permitted.

    Smokeless powder is not permitted.

    Lead bullets are recommended.

    Paper patch bullets may be permitted.

    Period-correct sights such as vernier tang sights or globe front sights are appropriate for this division.

    Modern electronic optics are not permitted.

    Single-Action Revolver

    Firearms must be traditional single-action revolvers or faithful reproductions.

    Revolvers must be manually cocked for each shot.

    Double-action or semi-automatic handguns are not permitted in this division.

    Electronic sighting devices are not permitted.

    Optical sights may be restricted depending on final division standards.

    Lever-Action Rifle

    Firearms must be lever-action rifles of traditional design or faithful reproductions.

    Semi-automatic, pump-action, and bolt-action rifles are not permitted in this division.

    Electronic sighting devices are not permitted.

    Iron sights or traditional optical sights may be permitted depending on final division standards.

  • The Longhunter Society accepts bison entries only when taken on a fair chase hunt in areas where bison are recognized as wildlife rather than domestic livestock, and where a specific hunting license or big game tag is required.

    Accepted locations include:

    • House Rock Ranch – Arizona
    • Alaska
    • Henry Mountains Range – Utah
    • Pink Mountain Herd – Canada
    • Northern Yukon Herd
    • Custer State Park and Crow Reservation (only when the hunter is issued a permit from the Park or Reservation)

  • The Longhunter Records Committee reserves the right to review any entry, equipment configuration, sighting system, projectile, ignition system, or hunting circumstance not expressly addressed in these rules.

    Eligibility decisions will be based on:

    • adherence to fair chase principles
    • historical character of the division
    • preservation of traditional sporting standards
    • integrity of the Longhunter Record Book

Record Book Entry Rules

Entries to the Longhunter Record Book must be lawfully taken, meet Longhunter minimum scores, comply with fair chase principles, and be measured using the Boone and Crockett scoring methodology adopted by the Longhunter Society Record Book. Division-specific equipment rules apply. The Longhunter Society reserves the right to review any entry for compliance with both the written rules and the spirit of fair chase.
